Much has been made (and rightly so) about the huge number of hate crimes committed against people because of the victim’s religious beliefs. Unfortunately, there is another side to religiously-motivated hate crimes — situations wherein the perpetrator’s religious beliefs create a kind of social intolerance that lead them to commit hate crimes. Because of our strong beliefs in religious freedom, as a culture we’ve been reluctant to tackle this side of hate crimes. We can no longer afford that luxury.
